About this session
In this presentation, we covered principles of good mental health, the work All Calls Signs does as a peer support network, and how every one of us has a duty of care to the people we come into contact with to help prevent suicide and support recovery.
All Call Signs is a peer support network for veterans, serving military personnel and their family members, they support military community members experiencing mental ill-health or social hardship.
Over four years, they have helped prevent hundreds of incidents of suicide and self-harm. They joined SASIG for this session to share what they have learned over this time, including the themes to suicidal behaviour and common roadblocks faced by family, friends and colleagues wishing to support those in crisis.
Vicki Vidler from the Bank of England also joined us, who is also the founder of the Security Consortium for the Prevention of Suicide (SCPS). Vicki explained why suicide is not only a public health issue, but also a security one.
The very definition of security is ‘being free from danger or threat’. In this understanding, the security profession has a responsibility and key role in preventing suicide and reducing the danger and threat of suicide.
As keeping people safe is our business, we have an opportunity to use our expertise to tackle this as a community of people dedicated to protecting others.
Please watch this very important session to learn more both about available support and how to provide support to others.
